Reader Mode
Read any article in a clean, distraction-free view with light, dark or sepia themes. Pro adds fonts, spacing, read aloud, PDF and a reading list.
- 1 Press 1 in the popup
- Runs in your browser
- Opens over the page
A reader mode that makes any article easy to read
Reader Mode pulls the article out of a busy web page and shows it on its own: the headline, the text and the images that belong to it, laid out in a calm column. Ads, pop-ups, sidebars, related links and sticky bars are left behind. It sits over the original page, so one click takes you back.
It is free, and it remembers how you like to read.
Free: a clean page in your colours
Choose a Light, Dark or Sepia theme and one of four text sizes. Dark is easy on the eyes at night, and Sepia’s warm paper tone is comfortable for long reads. Your choice is saved for next time.
Pro: make it truly yours
- Font, spacing and width: switch between Serif, Sans and Mono, set line spacing to Compact, Normal or Relaxed, and choose a Narrow, Medium or Wide column.
- Read aloud: listen to any article with your computer’s built-in voices, handy while you cook, commute or rest your eyes.
- Save as PDF: print a clean copy of the article with no ads or menus, ready to keep or annotate.
- Reading list: save up to 20 articles to read later and open them from the popup.
Why read this way?
Long lines, tiny grey text and moving ads make reading tiring and slow. A single, well-spaced column at a size you choose is easier to follow and kinder to your eyes. It also helps people with dyslexia, low vision or attention difficulties, who often find cluttered pages hardest to read.
Who uses it
- Researchers and students reading long articles and papers on the web.
- Developers going through documentation and blog posts without distractions.
- Anyone who reads news and recipes and is tired of the clutter around them.
Reader Mode works best on articles, blog posts and documentation. Pages that are mostly apps, forms or galleries do not have an article to pull out.
Tip: Open the DevToolkit popup and press 1 on the hub to open Reader Mode.

Reader Mode questions
Is Reader Mode free?
Yes. The clean view, the three themes and the text sizes are free. Font, spacing and width controls, read aloud, save as PDF and the reading list come with DevToolkit Pro, a one-time payment from $25.
How is this different from Chrome's built-in reading mode?
Chrome's reading mode opens in a side panel next to the page. DevToolkit's Reader Mode replaces the page with a full, centred reading view, with themes, and with Pro adds read aloud, PDF and a reading list.
Does read aloud send the text anywhere?
No. It uses the voices built into your computer and browser.
Why does Reader Mode not work on some pages?
It needs an article to pull out. Home pages, shops, apps and forms often do not have one.
